Very low standard

Whilst on holiday I had occasion to walk in the Nelson Medical Practice as I needed to see a Doctor. The receptionist was very nice and helpful who made me an appointment some 90 minutes later at the Lighthouse Medical Centre. Again the receptionist was very nice and helpful and booked me an appointment with a Doctor almost immediately. After examination and discussion the Doctor ( female) refered me to the James Paget hospital for further treatment. I could not have received quicker or better treatment anywhere. I wish to express my gratitude for the care and treatment I received by the Doctor and team at the Lighthouse Medical Centre and the Receptionist at the Nelson Medical Practice. All concerned are a credit to their profession. The NHS.

All staff are very helpful and very friendly.

I came to this practice after being a patient at a handful of local practices in London. The Greyfriars/Lighthouse experience used to be head and shoulders above what is typical in the Capital. Before the Greyfriars practice became the enlarged Lighthouse practice consultations were generally friendly, but to the point. Decisions were made quickly, referrals occurred automatically and treatment wasn't rationed. My favourite G.P., who sadly retired last year, had a delightfully perspicacious and personable manner, which would serve as an excellent example to other G.P.s.Sadly, since the Lighthouse was formed out of two former practices, waiting times have increased both to obtain an appointment and to be seen once inside the buidling. Sometimes a Doctor running late apologizes, sometimes not. The general impression left by the staff these days is of being greatly overloaded. The practice used to work better. The recent closure of the walk-in center at the facility has left the middle of town without a first response practice. A number of people, particularly visitors, have commented that going to the already crowded A&E dept. at the James Paget for minor injuries and illnesses is a burden for them.My latest contact with the practice was instigated by them and was not a positive one. The practice blood pressure monitors don't tally with mine; the G.P.'s monitor always reads higher. I have replaced mine recently with the latest Omron; the brand the NHS employs. Half the time my readings are not high and do not merit medicating for the condition, but an expensive cocktail of medications is autocratically forced on me by the new G.P.; it's medicate by the book all the way here. Efforts to persuade the latest lady doctor, about the 7 or 8th to throw herself into the fray, that the medications are not actually doing much after 10 years of prescription fall on deaf ears.

These hard working ladies and gents deserve praise for the outstanding work they do under less than ideal circumstances. They work long hours and treat every patient equally regardless of how they are treated themselves which in GT Yarmouth can be a real challenge. In spite of the fact that they are an under-funded NHS practise they do exemplary work.
